Do you know where you are?

Where in England are you? That's the name of this "game."

A while back I did a post with pictures of well-known American landmarks. It was a bust. A few of you were able to identify things like the U.S. Capitol, Niagara Falls, stuff like that. None of you knew them all. Not even the Americans, as I recall.

This time it will be your turf. All the following pictures are in England. But they are hard. At least I think they are hard. Some are harder than others, of course. If you don't travel much, you are probably not going to get them all. And they are not super famous ones like I used in the American version of this game.

All you have to do is name the city that the object in the picture is located in. You don't even have to name the object itself to get credit.

Look at the numbered pictures below and give you answers in a comment. If you can't get them, I will come up with an easier version. Americans can play too, but I'm pretty sure you won't get any. Unless you've not only lived in England but also traveled a lot. Let's see what you know. Who can name all 12 cities?

  1. Bl**dy H**l I'm a Brit and I can only get one!
Its Coventry and its number 6 and just for fun I think 9 is Leeds but on the other hand it could be Singapore!

  2. This has to be the coincidence of all time, as anyone visiting my postcards will know. I suspect it's unlikely that anyone else will know the first, so I'll tell you:

    1. Engineer's memorial, Southampton. In memory of the engineers who lost their lives when the Titanic sank in 1912.

I'll leave the rest to another though I believe I know one or two.

  3. 1. Southampton.
    2. Winchester.
    3. Leeds.
    4. ?
    5. Birmingham.
    6. Coventry.
    7. - 8. No idea.
    9. Chinatown Newcastle
    10. - 11. No idea.
    12. Bath? It looks like Bath but I'm not at all sure.

The trouble with something like this is that it would be so very embarrassing not to recognise something close to home. 7, 8 and 11 look horribly familiar.

  4. Racist! They are all English!
No 4 looks like London. The memorial at Hyde Park Corner. The 'Blues & Royals' are the only ones to troop through the gap.
If I am right of course.

  5. I don't think 4 is London, or at least nowhere I know. Not that I really know London. Marble Arch is much bigger and paved, and Wellington Arch doesn't have that railing around it.

  7. Okay, you've got me pretty much beat...

2 is what is claimed to be "King Arthur's Round Table", in Winchester Cathedral, though there is no evidence for it, no proof there ever was an Arthur.
3 is a gilded owl on the Leeds Civic Hall.
6 is Lady Godiva, in Coventry.
The rest I have no idea whatsoever...at a guess,
5 might be Admiral Lord Nelson, so I'd guess it to be in Portsmouth, 10 appears to be a giant animalistic turd, -Liverpool?
11 Banbury? could be anywhere, generic high-street stores and an old stone cross.
    12 Bristol?
In my defence, I'd say these are pretty obscure, not exactly national landmarks, most of them.
9, by the way is most definitely not Leeds. Nor Singapore.

  10. Soubriquet, nearly. The Round Table isn't in the cathedral but in the Great Hall, the last remnant of the castle. It's not claimed to be the actual Round Table, if there ever was one, but it does date back to the 14th century and repainted for Henry VIII for some special occasion to which I wasn't invited, so the details escape me.
